Here we go again. The Jeffrey Epstein files are back in the news, freshly scrubbed, redacted, and sanitized by the same institutions that failed to protect the public interest at every turn. The FBI and DOJ have delivered their latest version of the gospel: no client list, no blackmail ring, just a lot of paperwork, graphic content, and ‘technical difficulties’ on the prison cameras.
Move along, nothing to see here. Except, of course, for the obvious rot at the core of our elite institutions.
The receipts are piling up. WIRED, not exactly a hotbed of wild-eyed conspiracy, confirmed through metadata and forensics that the DOJ’s ‘raw’ surveillance footage from Epstein’s jail cell was processed through Adobe Premiere Pro. A video ‘composite’, exported and uploaded after multiple saves. How ‘raw’ is that, exactly?
Berkeley professor Hany Farid, a leader in digital forensics, says this edited video wouldn’t pass muster as admissible evidence. His solution is simple: release the footage direct from the prison cams or shut up and admit you’re helping fuel conspiracies. I’ll give Farid this-he’s right. But that would require a bureaucracy more interested in truth than managing headlines.
Speaking of managing headlines, the Trump administration and its most loyal media attack dogs are now eating each other alive over this. Attorney General Pam Bondi-who once teased that the fabled ‘client list’ was sitting on her desk-walked it all back, then declared the only list on her desk is just Epstein paperwork. Even that, she claims, is so radioactive she’s holding it like the JFK files… so, you know, you’ll see it in 50 years.
Bondi’s walk-back hasn’t calmed anybody. Now, MAGA influencers, Fox News stalwarts, and Trump-aligned agitators are demanding her resignation (source). The administration thought it would quiet the base by letting influencers see ‘The Epstein Files: Phase 1’ at the White House. Instead, they found nothing but recycled, public information (source). Turns out if you try to appease people sick of lies with even more lies, it only gets them madder.
The farce isn’t even bipartisan anymore-it’s post-partisan. Steve Bannon-still out for blood-wants a special prosecutor for Epstein, for Russiagate, for everything. He’s joined by Jamie Raskin, who doesn’t want to let Trump off the hook and is publicly insisting every document that references him-especially those teased by Elon Musk-should be released (source).
Of course, Musk lobbed the obligatory grenade, accusing Steve Bannon (and, for a hot second, Trump himself) of being in the infamous files. He then retracted, but not before the feeding frenzy. It’s almost as if everyone wants the public focused on the fog and drama instead of, say, actually seeing the evidence.
Instead, the DOJ and FBI stick to their familiar script: there’s no client list, the court-ordered secrecy around Maxwell’s little black book stays, and any leftover records are too sensitive or too graphic for your lowly eyes. Victims’ privacy is the pretext, but redacting thousands of pages serves only one real constituency-the connected and the powerful.
So, the end result? Still more dark corners. House Democrats and conservative populists alike are stuck pounding the table for transparency, and establishment figures default to stonewalling while pretending they’re protecting decency.
The only thing everyone agrees on is distrust. MAGA is eating its own, progressives aren’t fooled, and legacy media sounds more like an infomercial for controlled release and process management than investigation. As CNN’s Jake Tapper pointed out, there’s a trove of FBI files that remains in ‘permanent’ blackout mode, but somehow the “case is closed.”
This clown show isn’t a bug. It’s the feature of non-accountability. Bureaucratic denial, lost footage, procedural ‘leaks’, and untraceable chain-of-custody files-this is what happens when intel agencies and political dynasties are accountable to nobody but each other.
Want to actually restore trust? Release it all. Every record, every tape, every piece of hard evidence-unredacted, untweaked, and unspun. If you can’t trust adults with the data, why bother claiming to protect anyone? Otherwise, the only thing ‘raw’ about this saga is the disgust aimed at every insider who thinks they get to edit our history and call it transparency.
